Apotheon

Apotheon for PC and PS4 is a 2D platform game with an open world. It was developed by indie Canadian studio Alien Trap, known from e.g. the popular free-to-play FPS Nexuiz and the well-received platformer Capsized.

Plot

The story is set in ancient Greece. It starts with a disastrous event: the ruthless goddess Hera overthrows her husband Zeus and takes his place. Never being fond of mortals, she now plans to destroy humanity. You play as a hero, who is the last hope of men. He needs to reach the summit of Mount Olympus and end the reign of the gods on his own.

Mechanics

The game was clearly inspired by such series as Castlevania or Metroid. Like them, Apotheon features an open world. The game encourages you to explore its levels, allowing you to find many interesting items. In combat, you use e.g. swords, spears, and shields. The game also features stealth sequences. From time to time, you have to battle a god, and after defeating them you gain their powers. Apart from the singleplayer campaign, the game features an expansive multiplayer mode, focusing on online tactical battles.

Technical aspects

Apotheon for {PLAT|} features attractive and unusual visuals. The game works in many high resolutions and the visuals are stylized to look like ancient paintings placed on .e.g ceramics. The animations are very smooth, only adding to the production's overall charm.
