The Plucky Squire is an action adventure game based on an unusual idea - while playing we explore both 2D levels stylized as illustrated children's books and 3D maps located in the child's room.
The Plucky Squire is an action adventure game in which we can play both on 2D maps and those made in 3D. This is a debut project of All Possible Futures studio.
Plot
The story revolves around a villain named Humgrump, who discovers that he is the villain in an illustrated children's book and is doomed to lose forever to the forces of good. To change that, he casts the brave squire Jot from the pages of the book into the real world.
The protagonist will have to survive in the real world and find a way to restore the story's original ending, as this is the only way to save the world from the book and his friends living in it.
Game mechanics
The Plucky Squire is an action adventure game, so while playing we explore maps, avoid obstacles, avoid traps, collect items and fight with enemies.
An unusual element of the game is that we can find here both 2D and 3D levels. Each type offers different types of challenges and unique gameplay mechanics.
The authors took care of a large diversity of gameplay. We face many different mini-games, which take the form of platforming, brawling and shooting inspired by arcade classics. Puzzles also appear regularly.
Game modes
The Plucky Squire offers only single player mode.
Technical aspects
The strong point of the game is the design. The 2D sections are stylized like illustrations from children's books, which creates an interesting contrast with the more realistic 3D segments set in a child's room.

VideoGamer: 8 / 10 by Tom Bardwell
Endlessly creative and playful, The Plucky Squire's effortless hop between intertwined 2D and 3D worlds is an ode to the illustrated delights of storybooks.
TheSixthAxis: 8 / 10 by Dominic Leighton
Charming, gorgeous and tonally perfect, The Plucky Squire is easily one of the indie highlights of the year.
Nintendo Life: 6 / 10 by Lowell Bell
Performance issues on Switch, at least at launch, bury an amazingly clever and charming adventure that we would wholeheartedly recommend otherwise. The Plucky Squire is certainly playable on the Nintendo Switch, but in no way can we recommend picking it up here if you have other means to play it. The fact that the Switch-branded trailers looked so great and that advance review copies weren't available on the platform - despite them being sent out for other systems - indicates that this version of The Plucky Squire needed much more time on the drawing board before release.
