The Orion Project Description
Guardians of Orion for PC, also known as The Orion Project, is a science-fiction based “twin-stick shooter”. The game is a spiritual heir and at the same time a prequel for Orion: Prelude – dynamic, multiplayer-oriented FPP shooter released in 2014. Both of the described titles (as well as the whole series) is an effect of cooperation between independent Spiral Game Studios and TREK industries.
Plot
The action of the game takes place 10 years before the events of Orion: Prelude. During the gameplay, we are once again taken to the titular Orion, a planet ravaged by fierce battles between dinosaurs (original inhabitants) and humans, eager to benefit from the planet’s natural resources. Before the humanity was affected with the resource scarcity that forced them to use older and more cost-effective technologies, the exploitation was in full bloom. As a direct result, Guardians of Orion introduces us to a large set of futuristic weapons and gadgets unavailable in its predecessor.
Mechanics
Unlike the previous installments of the series (as a matter of fact, only one – in reality, ORION: Prelude was an upgraded version of two previous games) which represented the FPS genre, Guardians of Orion is a more of a classic shooter, with a top-down view. Nevertheless, the game is similar in style, with the gameplay focusing on constant combat with continuous hordes of enemies, including already seen and completely new species of dinosaurs, as well as drones, absent from the previous installment. Three different classes of titular guardians have been introduced, with each class characterized by different skills that have a large impact on the gameplay. The title incorporates a large set of weaponry, a number of useful power-ups, and an RPG-style experience system.
Game modes
Guardians of Orion, released on PC includes a singleplayer mode, but the game was prepared mainly with cooperation mode in mind, either online or locally. PvP mode has been prepared for rivalry-loving players.
Technical aspects
When it comes to visuals, Guardians of Orion mixes a somewhat retro perspective with modern technology, courtesy of Unreal Engine 4. The developers themselves describe their game as “a SNES-inspired gameplay with a modern look”. Staying true to the gameplay specifics, the game couldn’t do without support for modern game controllers.
