A free virtual-reality experience based on 2016 The Last Guardian, developed specifically for PlayStation VR. The player assumes the role of the base game's protagonist, familiarizes himself with the game world through his eyes, and gets to know the protagonist's companion - Trico.
The Last Guardian VR Demo is a virtual reality experience developed for PlayStation VR and based on 2016's The Last Guardian. The game casts the player in the role of the young protagonist and gives them an opportunity to get familiar with both certain locations and the feathery, gigantic companion by the name of Trico – the creature constitutes one of the key features present. This new edition was created by the legendary Team Ico (a part of Sony) led by Fumito Ueda – those are the creators of such classics as Ico or Shadow of the Colossus.
Plot
The Last Guardian tells a story concerning the past of a man, who in his childhood, got kidnapped and taken away from his village. A huge creature by the name of Trico helped him back then to escape and return home. The Last Guardian VR Demo for PS4 does not contain the entire story, but the players can familiarize themselves with the boy's feathery companion.
Mechanics
The game delivers a typical VR experience, which means one should not expect to encounter many different mechanics. The player can explore the map (unfortunately, the game does not offer different movement options, what is typical for VR titles, so the player moves by pointing to certain spots in the locations) and interact with both objects (barrels and levers above all) and Trico – one can mainly stroke the creature, climb it and give it simple orders using gestures.
The Last Guardian VR Demo for PS4 is played from the first-person view. The VR goggles guarantee a sense of depth and scale unlike anything before. This demo version offers about fifteen minutes of play.
Technical aspects
The Last Guardian VR Demo is nearly exactly the same as the base The Last Guardian in terms of the graphics and the art style employed. However, since the game had to be conversed for the requirements posed by virtual reality, it was necessary mainly to lower the resolution, which is especially visible in the background.
Misc.
The Last Guardian VR Demo can be downloaded for free at the PlayStation store – one is not required to have the core version of The Last Guardian. Being in possession of the PlayStation VR goggles is necessary to launch the game.
