The Last Campfire is an adventure game with puzzle elements from the British Hello Games studio, responsible for No Man's Sky and Joe Danger series. The game was announced in December 2018 during The Game Awards ceremony. The Last Campfire is an experiment of developers who wanted to try themselves in a completely different genre of games. The inspiration for the creators were games such as Journey and Abzu.
Mechanics
In The Last Campfire we play the role of a hooded monster dressed in a coat - Ember who split from the group of pilgrims and lost his way. We observe the action from the third person's perspective. During the adventure, we walk through climatic locations, filled with the ruins of a long forgotten civilisation and inhabited by a small number of lethargic beings - including the other Embers that have been pilgrimaging through here before us, but have lost their strength and stopped smouldering. To wake them up from their sleep, we need to solve the puzzle and unlock the way to the flame that will revive them. The puzzles are not overcomplicated and most often come down to manipulating the elements of the environment; over time, the Ember receives a magical instrument that allows him to move the metal elements at a distance (this is somewhat reminiscent of the power of Magnesis in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild). The locations are rather small, but full of nooks and crannies and hidden passages. We are constantly accompanied by the voice of the narrator (played by Rachel August) telling us about our hero's feelings.
Technical aspects
The Last Campfire has a high quality audiovisual setting that is inspired by the already mentioned Journey and Abzu games. The locations we visit are atmospheric and full of details.
