Tank Warfare: Tunisia 1943 for PC is a complex strategy game developed by Graviteam, a development studio known from a number of tank warfare themed games.
Plot
Tank Warfare: Tunisia 1943 takes us to Tunisia, enabling us to take part in the second phase of Operation Torch – an Allied attempt to recapture the coast of North-Western Africa. After taking Morocco and Algeria, the Allied forces had proceed to seize Tunisia, which unexpectedly maintained a large Axis presence. The German counter-offensive in December 1942 has put the pressure on Allied forces and led to a major campaign that ended in May 1943. The player can choose between both sides of the conflict, each with a separate campaign.
Mechanics
The authors prepared two extensive campaigns that take place on a dedicated map encompassing over four hundred square kilometers based on historical maps, photographs, and video materials. The gameplay sports both turn-based and real time phases, a system similar to the one found in Total War series. As a result, we conduct real-time battles in a three-dimensional environment that see us take direct command over the nearby forces, as well as control the course of the campaign through a turn-based strategic mode which allows the player to assign forces, pull back exhausted units, resupply, or send the damaged vehicles back to recuperate. The game contains over fifty different battle vehicles used by Axis and Allied forces.
The game is especially characteristic for its immersive realism, including an advanced AI module that leads the enemy forces and often counters our actions. The individual soldiers are described with a number of statistics such as overall experience, morale, or endurance which have certain effect over their actions in the field. Furthermore, we can group our forces into formations that help us respond to the situation at hand. We are also left with a realistic damage model introduced thanks to a complex physics engine that governs how projectiles affect the vehicles, fortifications and the environment, including more complex factors such as trajectory and piercing power. Moreover, the battlefield is affected by changing weather conditions and the day and night cycle, forcing the player to adapt their approach accordingly.
As a result of the difficult gameplay, the authors created an extensive tutorial that offers a step-by-step introduction to the core concepts of the game. Aside from the above, the conclusion of each battle offers a detailed statistics section that details the losses and other numbers that may prove in handy during further encounters. Finally, the game contains a complex encyclopedia that outlines the events that took place during the campaign and serves as a database of the units and weaponry that took part in the operation.
