The Mystery of the Statuettes is the first Polish adventure game that appeared on PCs in 1993 thanks to Metropolis. The main character of the program is John Pollack, one of the best Interpol agents. In his role, you'll have to deal with the mysterious theft of the ancient artifacts in which Joachim Wardner is involved - a former CIA service commandos, using all-round knowledge and intelligence for despicable purposes.
The mystery of the statuette does not resemble classic adventure games, in which you can see a moving hero and different locations on the screen. Instead, Metropolis programmers offer a series of static, digitalized images and a handy menu at the bottom of the screen to give commands (six actions, an inventory and a map are available). In the game we will meet a large number of items, characters we can talk to and relatively difficult riddles. The game is very demanding and you often have to show not only patience but also an open mind, able to find even the most absurd solution to the problem.
From the visual point of view, the program presents a decent level, mainly due to the use of a series of varied photos. Slightly worse is the soundtrack, which occurs in trace amounts. Sometimes there is no animation, but at the time when the Mystery of the Statue appeared on the market, the very use of digitised photographs was the peak of the achievements of Polish programmers.
