Swordsman VR is a medieval single-player action game using virtual reality technology. The game was developed by independent team Sinn Studio, who have previously created three other VR games: Wraith, Warzone and The Perfect Sniper.
Plot
The story of Swordsman VR revolves around the mythical Jötunn trying to enslave medieval people. Our task is to prevent the villain's plans, which will not be easy. In fact, Jötunn recruited captains from all over the world, offering them divine weapons in exchange for leading his army against humanity.
Mechanics
The main feature of Swordsman VR is sword combat. We can choose from a wide range of weapons and armour associated with four types of warriors: Vikings, Mongols, Samurai and European knights. In line with VR gaming conventions, the world is observed from a first person perspective (FPP). The battles are driven by a realistic physics system that affects both weapons and character models (including the player's avatar), allowing for precise strikes and parrying. Parrying makes it possible to slow down the time for a moment (i.e. bullet time), if we successfully repel an enemy attack. The gameplay is made more difficult by the fact that there are no interface hints in Swordsman VR known from many other games competing with it: we must judge for ourselves whether we have succeeded in delivering a counter-attack or a killing blow.
As we win on successive arenas, we receive gold and skill points. We can spend the gold on new equipment, be it weapons or armour. On the other hand, developing skills will increase the hero's combat potential. All this will increase our chances of defeating bosses, for which we receive a powerful magical weapon.
Game modes
The game features three main game modes. The first one is the campaign, where we try to prevent the mischievous Jötunn (although the plot does not play a major role here). The second one is Arena, which is a single skirmish with enemies. The final game mode is Horde, where you face endless waves of undead enemies and try to survive for as long as possible. In all of them we fight against enemies controlled by artificial intelligence. The game does not offer the option to play with other players.
In addition, Swordsman VR uses gameplay modifiers. Those allow you to increase the difficulty level in a number of ways, such as by doubling the health of enemies, disabling instant kills when hit in the head and many, many other options. Thanks to this, each player can adapt the game to their own preferences.
Technical aspects
As a VR game, it requires virtual reality sets along with motion controllers to play. Graphics is realistic in style, albeit without the possibility to interact with the environment.
