SunnySide

SunnySide is a jRPG, life sim and agricultural sim game. It was developed by the indie studio RainyGames and published by Merge Games.

Plot

SunnySide takes us on a journey to the Japanese province. We take on the role of a new owner (or owneress) of a piece of land. Our task is not only to build a prosperous farm from scratch, but also to get to know the area and its secrets and make friends with its inhabitants. How our fate will turn out depends on our actions and decisions.

Game mechanics

In SunnySide we observe the action from the third person perspective (TPP). We can explore the vast, picturesque land. Smooth day and night cycle and changeable weather were implemented in the game. Our farm is the starting point. Although it doesn't look impressive at first, with time we cultivate larger and larger areas of land, breed more animals and construct various buildings. In addition, we supply it with modern inventions, such as photovoltaic panels, power generators, water pumps and specialised food production equipment. The latter allow us to produce our own soy sauce, tofu and various artisanal cheeses, or to bake bread from flour we have grown and milled at the local mill. As the area is full of mysteries, while exploring it, we often come across caves. In such places lurk enemies with whom we fight turn-based battles, inspired by battles from the Persona series.

The key to happiness in the Japanese countryside is getting to know its people and establishing relationships with them. Each of them has their own story and personality, and some of them also face various problems that we can help them overcome. In order to make new friends, we can also take part in various events or join various groups. As we progress, friendships with selected characters become closer and closer, eventually turning into romance.

The title offers a wide range of possibilities in terms of character customisation. At the start we choose the gender and appearance, and during gameplay we can freely modify the latter, deciding on her hairstyle and colour or changing her clothes. The same applies to the appearance of our farm, and even such trifles as a smartphone (which serves us not only to contact our friends, but also, among others, to shop online).
