Starship Commander: Arcade PC

The PC release of Starship Commander is a VR adventure game with a science-fiction setting developed by Human Interact in cooperation with Microsoft.

Plot

The action of the game takes place in a distant future, in which humans have colonized countless planetary systems. A player assumes the role of a spaceship commander, who has to carry out a mission that might influence the result of the intergalactic war.

Mechanics

Even though the plot description might suggest that this game is a space simulator, in truth, the PC release of Starship Commander is an adventure game in which a player is required to make decisions that affect the story.

The developers wanted a player to feel as a flesh and blood captain, similar to characters from classic science-fiction movies and TV series. This is why during the game, one does not have to bother with manual control of the onboard systems – this is the responsibility of one’s crew, while the player only issues orders.

This type of the ship controls were based on an advanced speech recognition system allowing a player to freely interact with every person onboard the ship, while the game analyzes whatever the player says and interprets it accordingly. Thus, instead of repeating previously remembered voice commands, one can enter realistic conversations with his crew.

Starship Commander also features a system of decisions and consequences that directs the plot onto different tracks, eventually leading the story to one of the available endings.

Technical aspects

The game has been developed for Virtual Reality headgear and is compatible with both Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. What is worth mentioning, the game features speech recognition system developed based on technology created by Microsoft’s Cognitive Services department.
