Splatoon Video Game Series
Splatoon is a series of colorful shooters in which we view the action from a third-person perspective (TPP). During the gameplay we wield weapons spraying the terrain and opponents with paint of our team's color; in this way we eliminate opponents and gain valuable territory. The essence of the series is team-based online skirmishes, but individual titles also have single-player story modes.
The series was designed by Nintendo and appeared exclusively on its consoles. The first part (Splatoon) debuted in May 2015 on the Nintendo Wii U platform. Its sequel (Splatoon 2) was released in July 2017 on Nintendo Switch. The third installment of the series (Splatoon 3) appeared on the Kyoto-based giant's hybrid console in September 2022.
The main characters of the series Splatoon are the Inklings (Inklings) - cuddly human-like creatures with the ability to instantly transform into an octopus-like creature. This ability of the Inklings plays a very important role during combat. In humanoid form, they can use various weapons, such as paint guns, grenades, rocket launchers and paint rollers. In turn, when transformed into an octopus, they can dive into a previously spilled substance, load a tank of liquid ammunition, hide in colored ink from enemies, and even move along vertical walls (as long as they have been sprayed with paint of their team's color beforehand).
The primary multiplayer mode is known as Turf War, where two teams compete to see which one manages to cover more of the battlefield with their color. Paint can also be used to temporarily eliminate other players, but victory is only affected by the size of the sprayed area when the time limit expires. The series also offers a number of other challenges, including online ranking modes: Splat Zones (in which players fight for control of specific zones), Tower Control (where the goal is to get a moving tower to the opponents' base), and Rainmaker (in which our task is to get a special weapon and deliver it to a specific location). In addition, Splatoon 2 introduced a cooperative mode to the series called Salmon Run, where a team of players must work closely together to defeat waves of attacking Salmonids. In addition to fighting regular enemies, battle participants must also destroy emerging bosses and collect the eggs that fall out of them.
Taking part in successive skirmishes, we earn money, which we can spend on new weapons, as well as clothing parts. The latter provide our character with certain bonuses (e.g. faster respawn or reduced damage).
For players playing alone, however, a story mode called Hero Mode has been prepared, telling the story of the Inklings' problems with the hostile Octarian species. The antagonists kidnap animals called Zapfish, which are sources of energy for the Inkling civilization. In order to thwart the Octarians' plans, the player must traverse numerous levels, where hosts of enemies and powerful bosses await.

A continuation of a multiplayer-focused TPP shooter from 2015, developed for the Nintendo Switch console. Splatoon 2’s gameplay follows its predecessor and lets the players control Inklings – joyful human octopuses who fight using paint-based weapons. Those can be used not only to attack opponents, but also to paint the map – which is one of game’s objectives and allows increased movement speed and faster ammo regeneration. Major novelties include e.g. new weapons (Splat Dualities), moves (Dodge Roll) and heroes (including refreshed versions of the old crew). Controls have been adjusted to both Joy-Con and Pro Controller (a more classic gamepad). It is important to note that in both cases the players can use gyroscope, which is useful for aiming.
