Spice and Wolf VR is a short interactive movie using virtual reality technology licensed by the Japanese Spice & Wolf that began as a popular series of illustrated novels (the so-called light novel), and later received acclaimed adaptations in the form of manga and anime.
Plot
As in the original, Spice and Wolf VR is set in a fictional world reminiscent of sixteenth-century Europe. The main character is Kraft Lawrence, a traveling merchant who dreams of setting up his own shop. At a stop in Pasloe, he finds a girl with wolf ears and a tail in his car, who presents herself as Holo. She wants to see how the world has changed over the last few hundred years, during which the goddess has supported the people of Pasloe. Holo and Kraft embark on a journey together to make their dreams come true. Spice and Wolf VR shows the beginning of their story.
Mechanics
Spice and Wolf VR is not a game in the full sense of the word. The main campaign consists of three chapters, and all the fun comes down to interacting with Holo (for example, stroking her tail). From time to time, additional activities appear, such as searching for hidden coins or pointing to objects to see the heroine's reaction.
Game modes
In Spice and Wolf VR players will find two modes. The first one is a campaign during which they get to know the beginning of Kraft and Holo's history. The second one is the interactive mode, as the name suggests, abandoning the narrative in favour of free contact with the wolf goddess.
Technical aspects
Spice and Wolf VR supports virtual reality headgears on all platforms, but they are not required. Their absence limits the number of interactions with Holo slightly, but even without them the whole campaign can be completed.
In terms of its visuals, the game follows in the footsteps of many anime adaptations. The three-dimensional visual setting is based on the style known from the animated series and manga. An unquestionable advantage for the fans of the series is the involvement of voice actors known from the television series: Jun Fukuyama as Kraft Lawrence and Ami Koshimizu as Holo.
