Pure Nintendo: 6 / 10 by Rachel Poli
Spells & Secrets has potential, but the frame rate drops on the Nintendo Switch make it frustrating to play. Otherwise, the controls aren't too bad, but the overall story and characters are lackluster.
GameGrin: 8 / 10 by Artura Dawn
My only gripes are predominantly mechanical and slightly limiting options, as otherwise, Spells & Secrets is an easy no-brainer for magic lovers and enthusiasts looking for a wizarding home.

The ideas are there for a mix of combat and puzzle-solving, but the clumsy controls make it stumble a bit
Spells & Secrets Description
Spells & Secrets is an action adventure and roguelike game. It was developed by independent German teams Alchemist Interactive and rokaplay, and its development was possible thanks to successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter.
Plot
Spells & Secrets takes us to the alternative version of modern reality in which magic exists. We play as a young wizard (or sorceress). Unfortunately, things don't go our way, because on the first day of our stay at the Greifenstein Academy it is overrun by monsters and other magical creatures, which plunges it into chaos. From now on all hope to save the professors and other students rests on our shoulders.
Game mechanics
We start the fun in Spells & Secrets from creating a character. The game features an extensive wizard, which allows us to choose the gender of our magic apprentice and customize his appearance to individual preferences. Then there's nothing left for us but to throw ourselves into the adventure.
We observe the action from an isometric view. Wandering through the school, where we find numerous classrooms and corridors, we deal mainly with solving puzzles and eliminating enemies. In both cases we use magic; although we start the game with only two spells, as we progress we gain experience and gradually expand the range of available spells. In addition, the school hides powerful artifacts that increase the potential of our spells. All this makes that over time we can combine spells in more diverse combinations, which in turn allows us to face more challenges. In addition, while playing we gain money, which we can use to purchase a variety of potions - from healing to explosive.
However, when we fail, we start the game almost completely from the beginning, losing the artifacts, coins and potions we've bought. Fortunately, after death we keep all the experience, which allows us to quickly unlock previously acquired spells or to try completely new ones. It's worth remembering that the locations are procedurally generated, so the school offers us completely new challenges and attractions in subsequent attempts.
Exploring the academy, solving puzzles and facing enemies, we save other students and teachers from oppression. After freeing them nothing stands in the way to talk to them in the schoolyard, which serves as a hub.
Game modes
Spells & Secrets allows you to play solo or in local co-op mode. For multiplayer, there are optional activities, such as Arcane Ball, which can be a variation on tennis or soccer, depending on your needs.
Technical aspects
Spells & Secrets features colorful graphics in an eye-pleasing cartoon style.
