Developed by the Polish developer Vivid Games, Space Pioneer is a mobile action game with numerous RPG elements. The game takes the players to a distant future, in which they assume the role of a bounty hunter traversing the space in search for opportunities to earn for a living. As one might easily guess, this type of career forces the main protagonist to face multiple threats lurking on the surfaces of various planets.

Plot

Space Pioneer for AND and iOS takes players to a distant future, in which interstellar cruises are a part of the everyday life. A player assumes the role of a bounty hunter traversing the space in search for numerous opportunities to earn for living. As one might easily guess, this type of career forces the main protagonist to face multiple threats lurking on the surfaces of different planets

Mechanics

A player observes the action from the top-down perspective. The game is divided into a number short missions, during which, apart from completing the main objectives (such as defending a given location on the map or hacking different devices), a player eliminates entire hordes of different adversaries – these include both minor enemies and the much more powerful bosses. Luckily, the main protagonist is not unarmed – a player gets at his disposal a wide range of firearms, which can be expanded throughout one's adventure. The aforementioned RPG elements include both character development (by improving the weapons and armor) and upgrading main protagonists combat abilities. Moreover, a player can expand their base, from which the character sets off onto consecutive missions.

Interestingly enough, particular missions are procedurally generated, which increases the replayability of the game. Moreover, the game also delivers special challenges, global events and online ranking boards allowing players to compare their scores.

Technical aspects

Apart from its simplicity, 2D visuals featured in the AND and iOS release of Space Pioneer are bound to satisfy a player - all thanks to the original cartoonish style and numerous colorful elements of the environment.

Space Pioneer is another very addictive Nintendo Switch title which originated as a Free-to-Play Mobile game. The game has been fully adapted to the hybrid console, removing all the microtransactions, rebalancing the rewards and combat difficulty, adjusting the UI into something much more pleasing, and implementing dual-stick controls with the physical Joycons. Although there isn’t that much variety or diversity with the enemies and planets, the gameplay shakes things up with multiple quests, missions, and trophies, as well as requiring strategic thinking around what weapons, gear, and armour to use. Whether playing on your own or with friends or family locally, if you’re looking for a game you can play in short-bursts then Space Pioneer will certainly keep you entertained.
