Sovereignty: Crown of Kings is a fantasy-based strategy game that combines the mechanics of complex 4X strategies with classic turrets and card elements. The Lordz Games studio from Luxembourg is responsible for the creation of the title, with such series as Tank Battle and Panzer Corps. The publisher's duties were taken on by an experienced Slitherine company.
The action of the game takes us to the vast land of fantasy and begins when the old Boruvian Empire begins to bend towards decline, and young kingdoms growing in strength willingly put their hand to his defeat, seeing in it a chance to create their own power. Starting the game, we can take the side of the collapsing Empire and try to rebuild its former glory. We can also lead one of the other kingdoms, leading them to power and power reaching the borders of the continent.
In total, we can choose from 35 factions with their own history and culture and a diverse racial structure, which includes people, elves, dwarves, orcs and undeads, among others. Depending on the chosen side of the conflict, the course of the campaign is slightly different and is related to the specificity of a given faction and its geographical location. There are also different units and their skills, and thus, the whole gameplay style.
The game takes place on several different levels, from which the mechanics of complex 4X strategies comes to the fore. In leading our people to prosperity, we must focus on expansion, sourcing raw materials, trade and economics, as well as espionage, diplomacy and relations with neighbouring kingdoms. However, when peaceful solutions fail, we resolve disputes in a fight, which was realized on the model of classic turn-based war strategies like Panzer Generala.
Battles are played on boards divided into hexagonal fields, in which take part trained by us troops and recruited during the game heroes, whose special abilities may determine the outcome of more than one skirmish. During combat, individual units gain combat experience and develop their skills, as well as unlock completely new ones. As befits a fantasy game, during the confrontation with the enemy, we can also take advantage of a wide range of spells, which we learn gradually as the game progresses.
Game developers have actively involved a community of players in the process of creating the game. Moderation tools have also been made available, allowing users to design their own modifications or download works by other players.
