SimCopter is the first attempt in the history of the series to meet the eternal dreams of players, limited so far by the technical capabilities of home computers. For who of us - gorging nights while playing SimCity or SimCity 2000 - didn't dream of being in the virtual city of sim for at least a moment? Maxis decided to make it possible for all fans of the series by creating a helicopter simulator, in which we can visit the cities we created in SimCity 2000 from a bird's eye view.
The game puts us in the role of a pilot helicopter and allows you to play in one of the two modes. In free mode, which is a real attraction for all SimCity fans, we will be able to import to the game any map of the city, created by us in the last installment of the series, and then enjoy the views of the metropolis.
In the career mode, our task is to fulfill a number of missions taking place in the areas of previously prepared cities. These tasks can be divided into several main groups. The most important of these are rescue missions, such as saving sim trapped on the roof of a burning skyscraper, drowning as a result of boat capsizing or sentenced to a certain death in a fast-paced train. The next group will be relatively simple missions, in which we have to unload the traffic jam in the city through appropriate traffic redirection. In fire-fighting missions we focus on extinguishing burning buildings, while in criminal missions we focus on helping the police in capturing a dangerous robber, arsonist or burglar. Sometimes we will get the task of stopping the riots, carrying out the MEDEVAC mission of transporting the wounded or ordinary transport missions requiring the delivery of a sim from place to place. "Free time" can be used e.g. to admonish speeding drivers.
We start our career with a modest amount of cash and equipment and above all with a small and weak helicopter model. We are rewarded with an appropriate amount of money and points for performing particular tasks. After collecting enough points, the game offers us to move to the next city. We spend cash on equipment and, of course, better and better models of helicopters. Keep in mind that the above resources can be both accumulated and lost, e.g. through some serious error or our unfortunate actions during the mission. From time to time we will be rewarded with access to a special mission at the helm of the legendary Apache AH-64D helicopter.
As in every game from the series, so in SimCopter the creators advise us with a specific sense of humour. In the game we are going to have to face to face with UFOs, which by appearing in the city kidnaps innocent sims or causes fires. From the graphic point of view, the game does not throw us on our knees, although the undoubted advantage is the fact that for the first time in its production Maxis offers us full 3D. The sound layer allows you to choose from five available radio stations broadcasting classical music, rock, jazz, techno and mix. The game also allows you to record your own videos from the course of the game.
As a curiosity, it is worth noting that for the first time in the game appears the official language of sims, called "simlish" - well known to players from later studio productions, such as The Sims.
