Shenmue Online is an unfinished MMO adventure game developed by Sega's development team led by Yu Suzuki. The axis of the plot was planned to make the events presented in Shenmue II, and the players were to become members of three competing clans, competing for influence in the area of Southeast Asia.
Shenmue Online is a MMORPG based on the realities of a well-known two-part series of console adventures. Players join the ranks of one of the three clans available in the game (Shen Hua, Xiu Ying and Wu Ying Ren to choose from) and take part in events known from the second installment of Shenmue. They carry out numerous tasks assigned by clan leaders and develop the potential of the party they represent. Everything is happening in Hong Kong, China and Macao at a time close to modern times.
Just like the singled prototypes, Shenmue Online also has a very extensive storyline and a grand screenplay. So we are not dealing with another, schematic MMORPG, focusing only on murdering monsters and players. The game scenario abounds in all kinds of intrigues. Clicking on subsequent quests takes the story forward, which of course unlocks access to new missions and opportunities. In total, more than 150 unique tasks have been prepared, requiring from players both a sober mind and the ability to think logically, as well as a certain dose of reflex and dexterity. Additional attractions are events served to players by masters of the game, offering periodically or permanently new attractions, locations and game modes. The essence of Shenmue Online, in addition to its rich plot, are primarily numerous accessories and mini-games, such as darts, dice, casino - some of them are probably well known to fans of console scenes of the world of Shenmue.
The possibility of fighting, of course, has not been abandoned. A dedicated Action Battle module has been prepared with attention to detail, which should appeal especially to fans of eastern martial arts and three-dimensional fights. It supports over 1000 unique blows and combat techniques, including weapon fighting (e.g. nunczako, poles or magic staffs). An important element of the world presented is also the professional activity of heroes led by players. A number of jobs are foreseen, enabling further development and specialisation in a specific field of knowledge.
As befits a game from the Shenmue series, the team headed by Yu Suzuki took care of the appropriate graphic design of the position they hold. The game engine can efficiently display huge spaces, so that players have the opportunity to admire the vast, climatic landscapes (including urban ones). In the background we are played by an atmospheric, oriental soundtrack.
