Plot
The story doesn't play a particularly important role in Shatter Remastered Deluxe. Nevertheless, the main character of the game is a paddle, which one day decides to get out of captivity of the machine lords. To do this, she will have to travel a long way and face numerous dangers.
Game mechanics
Just like in Arkanoid, in Shatter Remastered Deluxe we control a paddle that bounces the ball, destroying objects flying around the board. By eliminating subsequent "blocks", we gain shards, which we can spend on useful power-ups (like a shield) or on using a devastating attack called shrapnel storm. The game consists of 71 levels located in 10 different worlds. Apart from standard boards, there are 9 bosses to defeat.
Game introduces a number of new solutions to the simple and a bit old-fashioned mechanics used in Arkanoid. Rectangular levels and challenges in which the paddle is located at the bottom of the screen and objects waiting to be destroyed float above it, quickly give way to round boards full of moving blocks and various obstacles and arenas presented from the side. The title also gives us much more control over the ball, allowing us to pull it towards us or release it in the direction we want. This can be useful especially in moments when we try to destroy a single "block". And it doesn't end there, as clashes with bosses are governed by their own laws and introduce unique rules, for example changing the game into a simple shoot'em up.
An interesting fact is that the balls are used here as "lives". Although there's nothing stopping us from using them one by one, we can also release them all at once. It's true that controlling them then requires incredible reflexes and monkey's dexterity, but this way we provide ourselves with much greater power of destruction and we speed up a process of finishing the boards.
Game modes
Apart from the story mode, Shatter Remastered Deluxe includes Endless module, in which we have to stay alive as long as possible, Boss Rush mode, where we eliminate next bosses one by one and also Time Attack variant, in which we try to gain as many points as possible in a given time. The title allows to play solo or in local co-op mode. A substitute for online competition are rankings, where we can show off our achievements.
Technical aspects
Shatter Remastered Deluxe stands out from the original thanks to a thoroughly refreshed graphics made in a colorful, neon style. The synthwave soundtrack has also been re-mastered.
