Shannara is an adventure game set in the fantasy universe created by Terry Brooks. This title is not a direct adaptation of any of the novels, but it depicts the events taking place between the volumes Shannara's Sword and Elven Stones. We observe the game from the perspective of the first person and move in a jump between static locations. We spend most of our time exploring the environment in search of objects and solving puzzles with them.
The main protagonist is Jak Ohmsford, whose father, Shea, is the legendary hero responsible for defeating the evil wizard named Bron. Druid Allanon warns Jaka that the mighty opponent has returned, and the only way to finally annihilate him is to conquer Shannara's unique sword and to unite the other races and hit the forces of the Harrow together.
NPCs can join the main character during the game. Each of them has its own equipment and features. We are not dealing here with any character development used sporadically in action adventure games. From time to time we take part in clashes with enemy creatures, but they have a relatively small number of options available to players. Our role is mainly limited to choosing an attack target, possible withdrawal of a specific hero to a safe position or the use of a magic item. During a duel, the interface changes: the lower panel shows the silhouettes of heroes, the upper panel of enemies, and most of the screen is occupied by the animation of the attack of the unit. As a result, battles can be quite static and play a relatively minor role. The creators focused mainly on the puzzle aspect.
Shannara has a two-dimensional drawing visual setting maintained in a fairy-tale atmosphere. Most of the time we spend looking at the static boards. Animations are observed only during the fight and film interludes.
