Serpent in the Staglands Description
Serpent in the Staglands for PC is an isometric cRPG inspired by the classic games like Baldur’s Gate or Darklands. It was developed by an American indie studio Whalenaught and funded on Kickstarter.
The Plot
The game takes place in the titular Staglands: a cold, harsh land inspired by the actual Bronze Age and medieval Transylvania. We take the role of a minor god Necholai, who descends to the Staglands on the day of winter solstice to take part in a festival organized in his honor. When he tries to come back, it turns out his way home was blocked and he is now stuck among his followers. The only people he can rely on are a group of untrustworthy acolytes and a fanatic priest. He must create a party that will aid him in surviving in this new, dangerous world and help him find answers to all his questions.
Mechanics
Gameplay in Serpent in the Staglands for PC combines the elements from both modern and classic cRPG games. During our adventures, we control a party of five characters, whose powers and abilities are based on the combination of the equipment we give them and over 100 different magical, battle, and crafting skills. The game is nonlinear, so we can freely explore the rich open world the game offers. Serpent in the Staglands has no typical journal in which we can track our quests, the game only provides us with a notebook in which we can write all the information we have about the quests and riddles. We will have to faces dozens of monsters, ghosts, evil sorcerers, and mutinous outcasts. Serpent has a Real Time with Pause combat system, which allows us to make tactical decisions and use our party members’ special abilities.
Technical Aspects
Serpent in the Staglands for PC uses Unity 3D engine. The game’s visuals are much more ‘old-school’ and pixilated than the developers main inspiration, Baldur’s Gate.
