Don't Starve Video Game Series
A series of action adventure games with strong survival and roguelike elements. Canadian independent studio Klei Entertainment, known for such titles as Mark of the Ninja, Eets or Shank. The series was created during the height of the popularity of survival-oriented games, and one of its main inspirations was the extremely popular Minecraft.
The first part was released in 2013, initially on PC, followed by PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 consoles, as well as Xbox One (minus Xbox 360). The title included all the basic mechanics, some of which were introduced as a result of requests and suggestions from players testing the beta version. In 2014, the first official expansion was released, titled Don't Starve: Reign of Giants. The add-on made gameplay significantly more difficult, primarily through changes in mechanics, so that even users unfamiliar with the game had to develop new strategies. Among the most important innovations, it is worth mentioning the addition of two seasons - autumn and spring, as well as previously absent biomes, creatures (including the titular giants), schemes and finds. Network options were not included in the game until two years later. Standalone add-on Don't Starve Together allowed up to six players to play, both in private mode with friends and in public mode with strangers selected by the algorithm. In the same year, an expansion hit the market Don't Starve: Shipwrecked, introducing to the game the possibility of traveling on the seas, taking into account the new possibilities and dangers associated with them. The title was developed by Capybara Games studio.
The series also lived to see a conversion for portable consoles - PlayStation Vita and Wii U. Released in late 2014 and early 2015, the game Don't Starve: Giant Edition used functionality specific to handhelds. The series - in the form of Don't Starve: Pocket Edition - also made its way to mobile devices, running on Android and iOS operating systems.
The primary task of the player in the series Don't Starve is to survive in adverse conditions. Accordingly, the indicator that best illustrates our success is the number of days survived, constantly visible on the screen. Initially, the game's protagonist is Wilson - a Victorian scientist - but over time we can unlock other playable characters.
The default game mode is Sandbox Mode, in which we explore the world on our own. However, after encountering an object marked Maxwell's Door, we can start a campaign consisting of five stages. In it, the player's main opponent is Maxwell, who presents him with successive challenges. Completion of a sequence of missions or death cause a return to Sandbox Mode.
The rhythm of our activities is determined by the cycle of day and night. During the day we are mainly engaged in exploration, gathering food and fuel, and constructing items and building a base. At night, dangerous beasts come out to prey, and our primary concern becomes sustaining lighting (without which we are defenseless) and fighting the creatures lurking in the darkness. Each day in the game lasts eight minutes of real time, but the relationship between the length of day and night depends on the current season.
As in roguelike trach, death in the series of Don't Starve is irreversible - the moment you die, you lose your saved game state and have to start playing from the beginning. Therefore, the player must carefully plan his moves and not take unnecessary risks. Our condition is evidenced by three basic statistics - health, hunger, and sanity. The latter is lost by staying too long in the dark, or by taking various unpleasant actions, such as digging up the graves we encounter. As we lose our sanity, our character's fears - personified through shadowy shapes at the edge of our field of vision - become more and more corporeal and insistent. We can regain our mental health through stress-relieving activities such as picking flowers, sleeping, or staying out in the sun.
The gameplay is presented from a third-person perspective, with an isometric view camera. The developers have opted for a distinctive graphic style with strongly outlined contours. The design of locations and characters is reminiscent of Tim Burton's works - on the one hand we are dealing here with exaggerated humor, based on overexpression and references to popular culture, but on the other hand the whole thing is presented in a grotesque way, with numerous horror elements. The atmosphere is complemented by evocative sound design and music track, composed by Vince de Vera and Jason Garner.

A standalone expansion for the 2013’s well-received survival sandbox game, Don’t Starve. The main goal of the add-on is to transfer the core premise of the original title into cooperative multiplayer gameplay. In the game, we still explore the world, gather food, build a shelter, fight various enemies, and take care of the protagonist’s physical and mental health. The primary novelty is the possibility of interacting with other players who can turn out to be either precious friends or deadly foes. Don’t Starve Together allows us to play both with our friends and with complete strangers. Another appeal of the expansion is the fact that it comes with the previously released DLC, Reign of Giants, which expands the original title with new bioms, enemies, and a full year cycle. The production can be obtained free of charge by all owners of the vanilla game.

Another DLC to a best-selling sandbox survival game - Don’t Starve. Unlike the previous two add-ons, this one was developed not by the original creators, but by Capybara Games - the team known for such games as Below or Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery. Don’t Starve: Shipwrecked focuses solely on single player content, drawing inspiration from the cult adventure novels, such as Robinson Crusoe. However, these were enriched with fantasy elements and a unique sense of humor. The expansion introduces new locations, characters, enemies, and weather effects. Additionally, the game lets you use a boat and sail around the sea dotted by numerous islands. In terms of audiovisuals, the add-on is on par with the base game. Although it includes a big chunk of new graphic elements, they match the original style.
