Colin McRae Rally Video Game Series
A series of racing games allowing players to take on the roles of rally car drivers. The series was created by Codemasters and is one of the leading brands in the portfolio of the British manufacturer.
The first installment of the series - Colin McRae Rally was released in 1999 for PC and PlayStation console. The titular patron of the game and, at the same time, of the entire series was British racing driver Colin McRae (1995 WRC champion), who also participated in the development process as a consultant. The production was considered successful, although not outstanding. Much more popular among gamers and critics was the second part, Colin McRae Rally 2.0, released in 2000. The following years brought subsequent installments of the series - Colin McRae Rally 3 (2003), Colin McRae Rally 04 (2004) and Colin McRae Rally 2005 (2004), celebrating triumphs on both PCs and sixth-generation consoles.
As befits the racing game genre, the Colin McRae Rally series allows players to take on the roles of drivers and sit behind the wheel of rally cars of various classes (ranging from sporty series models to vehicles meeting WRC requirements), often also originating from different historical periods. The gameplay can include a single race, championship, career and, in some cases, arcade trials. Complementing the single-player mode is generally functional multiplayer, allowing competition with live opponents in several variants. Games of the Colin McRae series stand out from competing productions with high-quality audiovisual design, including careful reproduction of the appearance and sounds of individual cars. This is especially true of games developed using the proprietary technology of the Codemasters Software studio - the Ego Engine.
