Alone in the Dark Video Game Series

The first production under this banner, entitled Alone in the Dark, debuted on personal computers in 1992. The masterpiece, overseen by Frédérick Raynal, was one of the first video games in which characters were made using polygons, and at the same time the first three-dimensional survival horror game in history (for which the 2008 Alone in the Dark made it into the Guinness Book of World Records). The title was an artistic and commercial success, and over the years it was released on other platforms as well.

Just a year later, the production lived to see a sequel, namely. Alone in the Dark 2, whose release was preceded by the debut of a spin-off titled Jack in the Dark. The second installment of the series departed from the scheme developed for its predecessor, placing more emphasis on combat than on exploration and puzzle solving. The third part of the series, i.e. Alone in the Dark 3, debuted in 1995 and was the last game under the banner to use the technology developed for the "one".

The silence that has prevailed on the subject of Alone in the Dark after the release of "three" was broken only in 2001, with the release of the game Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare. The production was clearly modeled on the brand Resident Evil, which has since grown into the new "queen" of the survival horror genre. The title received a warm reception, but did not breathe in the Alone in the Dark new life.

Another attempt to remind players of the brand took place in 2008, when a game simply titled Alone in the Dark. The project was plagued by various problems, as a result of which it was received very coldly; slightly warmer players and reviewers handled its revised version, i.e. Alone in the Dark: Inferno, released on PlayStation 3 a few months after the original's release.

In 2015, there was another attempt to put the brand on a completely new track. We are talking about Alone in the Dark: Illumination, a multiplayer shooter created with multiplayer play in mind. Negative player reviews and low ratings from industry media proved that this experiment also failed.

After THQ Nordic took over the rights to the brand, the task of creating a new installment in the series was entrusted to the Pieces Interactive team. Alone in the Dark, as the seventh installment of the series was called, was a reboot that re-told the story known from the "one".

Over the years, the brand Alone in the Dark has lived to see adaptations in the form of comic books, as well as films, i.e. Alone in the Dark from 2005, and Alone in the Dark II from 2009. The latter, however, presented an exceptionally low standard, while the former even made it into the Guinness Book of World Records (as the "least profitable film based on a video game").
