Senran Kagura Burst Re:Newal is a 3D action game combining elements of hack'n'slash titles with those of beat'em ups. The game is a comprehensive remake of the two initial installments of the Senran Kagura series – those came out for Nintendo 3DS (Senran Kagura and an extended edition bearing the title Senran Kagura Burst). Senran Kagura Burst Re:Newal was created by a Japanese company MarvelousAQL and the Honey Parade Games studio, which was founded by Kenichiro Takaki – the father of the franchise. It is worth adding, that the Senran Kagura series includes also comic books based on the games, a TV show, radio dramas, books, as well as countless gadgets with images of characters that have been presented to the fans throughout the years.
Plot
Senran Kagura Burst Re:Newal recreates the first part of the franchise, presenting a new depiction of the characters and the story that was continued in subsequent installments. The game is set in present-day Japan. The first campaign, which originates in Senran Kagura, follows the adventures of five female characters attending a secret academy known as Hanzo – it trains ninja fighters that work for the government and numerous organizations responsible for preserving peace and security in the country. The students learn fighting techniques, but also how to be accountable and loyal. As Hanzo ninjas, they are obliged to do whatever serves order and the well-being of the society. The students of the Hebijo academy stand in opposition to the main characters, as they represent opposite values. Hebijo ninjas take even the dirtiest assignments, working for suspicious corporations and crime groups. The second campaign, which was originally depicted in Senran Kagura Burst, gives an opportunity to assume the roles of Hebijo's five best students. Senran Kagura Burst Re:Newal also offers sets of single scenarios that familiarize the player with each of the playable characters.
Mechanics
Senran Kagura Burst Re:Newal abandoned the gameplay formula employed in the original releases for Nintendo 3DS. Instead, the creators decided to use a combat system that appeared in the following spin-offs - Senran Kagura: Estival Versus and Senran Kagura: Shinovi Versus. As a result, the game is a conventional product based on both hack'n'slash and beat'em up mechanics, apart from elements popularized by the Dynasty Warriors series. The player traverses large and oftentimes open locations depicting different fragments of a mysterious island, as well as fights large groups of adversaries at a time. The player's fighters can counterattack, avoid strikes, jump and run around freely. The combat system offers different kinds of combos, which can be unlocked in exchange for the gathered experience points. The characters can also activate their special ninja forms in order to be able to launch the ultimate and the most powerful attacks. The game has a distinctive damage system, as the costumes of the characters are what was also used for presenting the damage taken - clothing gets damaged over time in the game.
Game modes
The game offers an extensive single-player campaign, as well as a multiplayer component made up of a few modes inherited from Senran Kagura: Estival Versus.
Technical aspects
Senran Kagura Burst Re:Newal utilizes a three-dimensional engine used in production of Senran Kagura: Estival Versus and Senran Kagura: Peach Beach Splash, offering an adventure displayed in full HD, at 60 frames per second. The game has a huge number of optional costumes and accessories for the characters - the player can use them freely once they have been unlocked.
