Root Of Evil: The Tailor is a first-person adventure game with elements of horror. The title was created in less than a year as the first project of a one-man Vietnamese developer EastFog Studios.

Story

One evening, the police receive a report about disturbing noises coming from a detached single-family home. The couple living there recently are said to have had their first child. At the indicated address, the officers find a bloody scene and a baby crying in a cradle. The detective assigned to the case quickly discontinues the investigation due to lack of evidence, finding double suicide of the guardians.

Twenty years later, the area became known as the "house of fears", where unexplained things often happen. The orphan left by her parents - now an adult girl - still cannot accept their departure and hires a specialist who deals with contacts with the "other side". Can stories about mysterious lights passing through the abandoned floor be true? Are the noises of steps and the sewing machine starting up are just teenagers snooping around the property? Or maybe the tormented souls still want to pass something on to their daughter?

Mechanics

During the game we play the telepath named James. His task is to discover the mystery of the abandoned house and provide their client with an answer. Most of the time the player deals with a variety of puzzles, including searching for key plot items and solving logic puzzles, which enables them to read narrative hints from the past. The neighborhood is dotted with astral projections and tips from behind the grave, which our hero can decipher with their Gift.

Technical aspects

The game engine does a decent job at presenting the abandoned house and its surroundings. However, the dynamic lighting system, necessary in a horror game, deserves praise. The soundtrack is quite minimalistic and the most important element are quite realistic sounds of the environment, often able to build an atmosphere better than any sophisticated string parts.
