A prequel to Road 96, combining an adventure game with a rhythm game. Road 96: Mile 0 tells the story of Zoe and Kaito, as they learn about each other, but also about the dirty secrets of the fictional nation of Petria, the tyrant ruling it, as well as Zoe's influential father.
Road 96: Mile 0 is a prequel to the warmly received Road 96 from 2021. It is an adventure game with music game elements, developed by the independent DigixArt Studio and published by Ravenscourt.
Plot
The story of Road 96: Mile 0takes place before Road 96. The game takes place in the fictional nation of Petria (ruled by the totalitarian and tyrannical president Tyrak), specifically in the wealthy, splendorous city of White Sands.
The main protagonists are Zoe, already known from Road 96, and Kaito, the playable character of Lost in Harmony: Kaito's Adventure. While Zoe is the daughter of one of Tyrak's most important officials, her family living a high life, Kaito comes from the dangerous Colton City and moved to White Sands with his parents, looking for a better life. Once their paths cross, they become friends and eventually discover the disturbing truth behind Petria, Tyrak and Zoe's father. Throughout the game we learned what exactly got the girl to run away from home, as well as what exactly happened in 1986 during the Border Attack.
Mechanics
The gameplay in Road 96: Mile 0 is built out of two main layers. The first is the narrative layer; over the course of successive conversations we get to know Zoe and Kaito, their troubles and dilemmas they must face. The second layer is exploring their minds, represented as riding a skateboard through psychedelic locations These stages require dexterity, reflexes and a good sense of rhythm.
Technical aspects
The graphics of Road 96: Mile 0 retain the distinctive, colorful and pastel artstyle of Road 96. The game features an atmospheric soundtrack, its main theme being Land Locked Heart by the American band The Midnight.
