Blade of Destiny is the first installment of the Realms of Arkania series. In the following years, the game was continued in two fully-fledged versions, namely Star Trail (1994) and Shadows over Riva (1997). Blade of Destiny, like other titles from this cycle, largely refers to the principles of a paper RPG system called Das Schwarze Auge. The player is given the opportunity to lead a team of daredevils through the vast world, fighting monsters and solving quests.
The action of the first part of the Realms of Arkania series takes place in the world called Aventurien. The player-controlled team is entrusted with the task of stopping the threat from the hordes of orcs. To this end, it is necessary to contribute to the acquisition of the title sword of destination, with the use of which it will be possible to save the land. Proper gameplay is based mainly on attempts to find fragments of the map indicating the location of the lost artifact. As part of the curiosity it is worth mentioning that two years of game time is allocated for finding a sword. Failure to comply with the set limit is equivalent to automatic loss.
Like many classic role-playing games, the game starts with the creation of a new team of up to six heroes. These characters can represent many different classes as warriors, hunters or mages. As the game progresses, team members develop their skills and attributes, making them stronger and able to face more powerful monsters. Lovers of the series will also be interested in the fact that the producer has foreseen the option of transferring the team to other games from this cycle. This allows you to start playing with a stronger and well known team.
The fun is based mainly on the need to explore the game world. You have full freedom of action, but like RPGs such as Eye of the Beholder or Ishar, subsequent moves are made in a jumping manner. The action is observed from the perspective of the first person. The only exception are battles, when the isometric projection is switched on and subsequent movements are made in turn-based system. This means that team members and monsters perform their actions in turns, using top-down movement points.
