Ravenmark: Mercenaries is a turn-based strategy set in a fantasy world. The project was developed by Witching Hour Studios and is available in a free-to-play model with microtransactions.
Plot
Ravenmark: Mercenaries is a continuation of Ravenmark: Scourge of Estellion, but knowledge of this production is not necessary to enjoy the sequel. We are returning to the gloomy land of Eclisse, which is a field of conflict between the three nations. At the beginning of the game, we choose which side we want to support - this determines the units we get at the start. However, this is not a limitation, because in this game we play the role of a band of mercenaries and we can take orders from all three powers, as well as recruit their descendants. Winning provides us with a solid income, and failure provides us with considerable financial problems. Also, there is a system of reputation. Successes and disasters affect the attitude of all nations towards our band, opening up new contracts and losing access to others.
Mechanics
We spend the majority of our time on battles. They are played in the turn-based system, but it works a bit differently than in most of the productions of this type. In Ravenmark: Mercenaries, both sides give their orders in parallel and then passively observe how these orders are fulfilled simultaneously. As a result, to win, it is not enough to react to the opponent's movements. Instead, you have to learn how to predict them.
Ravenmark: Mercenaries offers extensive tactical mechanics. We have to make efficient use of various formations that can dramatically affect the effectiveness of the unit, as well as making use of the advantage that the terrain can provide. The authors have also introduced RPG elements in the form of a progression system for our heroes and regular soldiers. In addition, there is also a financial aspect. As mercenaries, we do nothing for free, and the money we earn can be invested in new warriors and better equipment.
Game modes
In addition to battles against artificial intelligence, the game also allows you to fight battles against other players. Multiplayer is asynchronous, which means that participants don't necessarily have to play with us at the same time. You only need to enter your commands at least once every three days. As a result, we usually fight several clashes simultaneously with many different opponents. Of course, nothing stands in the way of finding a rival who will give orders on an ongoing basis, and the considerable popularity of the game means that there are people willing to take part in such games.
