A unique tactical RPG from independent American studio Supergiant Games. The story of Pyre is set in a mysterious land called Downside, which is a variation on the Christian idea of purgatory. Pyre Description
Pyre for PC and PS4 is a unique action-RPG title, in which we help a group of Exiles in escaping a purgatory. It is the work of independent studio Supergiant Games, established by former employees of Electronic Arts and known for well-received productions Bastion and Transistor.
Plot
The story of Pyre is set in a mysterious land of Downside, which resembles the Christian purgatory. We play as a hero or heroine saved from death by three masked travelers. Our saviors request our help in uncovering the truth behind the Rites – a competition that grants its winners a pardon for their sins and the right to leave Downside.
Game mechanics
Supergiant Games’ production stands out with its gameplay, which combines elements of classic RPG titles, MOBA and even sport games. It is divided into two equally important parts. We explore the Downside traveling in a special wagon, which also acts as a place where we manage our party. We meet many unique heroes, and unveil fragments of the plot little by little, making decisions that affect the entire world and its inhabitants.
While everything mentioned above is no trivial matter, taking part in skirmishes is the key part of Pyre. They take place on special arenas and somewhat resemble a sports competition, as our heroes must capture a magic ball and deliver it to the other side of the map, to enemy’s base – with an opposing team obviously trying to prevent that. Both teams consist of three heroes, each having slightly different abilities. The ball itself can be passed between players or thrown far away. A proper tactic that takes into account the skills of individual heroes is the key to success.
Technical aspects
Pyre for PC and PS4 uses very colorful two-dimensional visuals, featuring an art style known from the previous works by Supergiant Games. Dialogues during the plot-driven part of the game take form of static scenes, similar to what players know from Japanese visual novel titles. On the other hand, duels use isometric view like MOBA titles or classic hack’n’slash games. All of this is complemented by a unique and climatic soundtrack.
