A racing game featuring flying cars, set in a cyberpunk city of the future and inspired by the genre classics, like NfS Underground 2. Punk Runner is the work of a single developer. The game offers an open world and we can challenge any other driver we encounter to have a race with them.
Punk Runner belongs to the racing game genre, and is set in a cyberpunk city of the future, where a "street" competition involving flying cars takes place. This is a work by independent creator Max Paraty, who lists Need for Speed: Underground 2 among his sources of inspiration. The game was created with financial support from the players.
Gameplay
In Punk Runner we take on the character known as Hero, who enjoys the reputation of being the best racing driver in a cyberpunk city of the future.
During the game, we sit behind the wheel of one of the flying cars, which instead of wheels are equipped with jet engines, and we traverse an open-structured metropolis. On the way, we look around for other traffic participants willing to race with us.
The game allows us to challenge any driver we encounter to a duel, and the winner is the competitor who manages to leave the opponent a kilometer behind.
Tuning cars and the driving model
As we progress, we accumulate resources that allow us to purchase various upgrades and modifications for our machines. In preparing the visual tuning system, the author drew inspiration mainly from Japanese car culture.
A realistic "driving" model was also developed. Thanks to it, machines from the game are supposed to behave like real cars, not helicopters, drones or even spaceships. This makes the game stand out from other futuristic racers.
