Plants vs. Zombies Video Game Series
A series of tower defense games developed by PopCap Games, an American studio founded in 2000, known mainly for producing casual titles. The company has to its credit, among others, a very well-received series of Bejeweled. In 2011, the company was acquired by Electronics Arts, which also brought some of its older games to the Origin platform.
The first part of the series was released in 2009. Initially, the game was to be called Weedlings, but during development the title was renamed to Plants vs. Zombies. The developers during the design and development of the game were inspired by such titles as Insaniquarium, Warcraft III or Magic: The Gathering. The production received very positive reviews and nominations for several prestigious awards. Encouraged by the success, the authors set to work on the second part, which was released in 2013 as a temporary exclusive for iOS systems.
A side installment of the series is the game Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare. Released in 2014, the title contained elements of the tower defense genre known from the original, but combined them with dynamic third-person gameplay characteristic of action games. The production was oriented towards a cooperative mode, with a strong emphasis on the need for teamwork and proper use of the skills of individual units. The second part of the game Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare was announced in 2015 during E3. Eventually, the title hit the market in mid-February of the following year.
In addition, the series lived to see an installment designed to be played within the popular social network Facebook. W Plants vs Zombies Adventures in addition to struggling against the invading waves of enemies, we could also deal with the development of our town. The project was closed at the end of 2014, after nearly a year and a half on the market. Inspired by such games as Magic: The Gathering were also reflected in a 2016 side-scrolling game - Plants vs. Zombies Heroes. The title combined solutions typical of the series with elements of a card game. The whole thing was set in the convention of superheroes fighting super villains, characteristic of comic books.
The series is present on all major platforms, including personal computers, consoles and mobile devices.
Since 2013, publisher Dark Horse Comics has been publishing the comic book Plants Vs. Zombies With a script by Paul Tobin. The title is available both in print and electronic form.
The gameplay in the series Plants vs. Zombies involves defending our home from the oncoming waves of zombies. We do this by planting appropriate plants and mushrooms in strategic places. Each species has different defensive and offensive skills, which requires careful planning of the course of the clash and skillful combination of individual skills. Plants in our garden can attack opponents, slow them down or force them to change their route. Also zombies come in many variants. Some resemble the classic living dead known from horror movies, but some can fly or summon more undead. The currency with which we can plant flowers and buy upgrades are suns. We earn them during gameplay and spend them in the store provided to players. The game boards consist of several paths through which zombies arrive, and the player's task is to secure each of them. Individual levels differ in scenery and time of day - photosynthesis is slower at night, which means we have to manage resources more sparingly.
The series is maintained in a cheerful, cartoonish style, being a parody of zombie productions rather than a horror film. The series also contains a number of references to popular culture, referencing well-known movies, books, TV series or songs. It also goes the other way - references to the series Plants vs. Zombies are present in such games as Left 4 Dead 2 or World of Warcraft.
