Planetiles
A combination of a strategy and a puzzle game, with elements of a platformer and a roguelite. Planetiles has us fill the planet surface with biome titles of different shapes, raising structures and avoiding creating graps. The game is meant only for singleplayer gameplay.
Planetiles is a strategy game with logical elements, in which the player's task is to fill the surface of the planets with blocks of various biomes. The creators of the game are the independent Polish studio MythicOwl, specializing in mobile games, including educational ones. The studio was established in 2014 in Warsaw, and until August 2016 it operated under the brand SteamBytes.
Mechanics
The core of the game is placing groups of square biome blocks (mountains, forests, deserts and agricultural fields) next to each other on the water surface of the planet. The game offers roguelite features - the levels can be completed multiple times by selecting different starting facilities, unlocked as we gain experience, and each approach is unique due to randomly generated pieces of land to be placed, somewhat resembling the shape of Tetris blocks. We observe the planet terrain from high above.
The main goal is to fill the entire area so that as few gaps remain as possible. To do this, it is necessary to perform random tasks related to placing a specific number of blocks of the same type next to each other, which provides us with additional pieces. When choosing a place for one tile, we see the next one, which allows us to plan our moves better.
The specific way of arranging biome tiles relative to each other allows us to build structures that provide skills. For instance, they can change tasks or draw new blocks. Every now and then we can also choose between two pairs of upgrades and a natural disaster, significantly affecting the course of the game. The former boost bonuses for future buildings, while the latter can temporarily disable their use or affect the game area, changing or even destroying the blocks we have placed.
We can play the game on one of three planets, which differ in size. They offer three difficulty levels (the area to fill increases with each subsequent one) and a free mode. We can finish at any time, although this is associated with a lack of points for unfulfilled goals. The game can also end from the lack of further blocks to arrange or after we fill 100% of the surface of the planet.
