A sequal to Parasite Ever, an SF horror game with extensive RPG elements. The players once again take control of Aya Brea, an officer who investigates mysterious attacks of mutant beasts.
Story
After the events presented in the first part, Aya Brea left the police and joined the FBI. There she became an officer of MIST, a special operations team, which examines all signals concerning the activities of monsters in the USA. One day she receives a message about strange events in the Akropolis Tower, where she encounters a new kind of creatures, which can become similar to people. In the course of the investigation, the protagonist comes across a trail of an underground research centre, which may hide the answers to questions about subsequent monster attacks on people.
Mechanics
The continuation of the 1998 hit develops some elements of the original and brings some changes to the mechanics. While exploring new places, the camera presents the action from a specific perspective set by the developers, similarly as in the first installments of the Resident Evil series. The devs removed the Active Time Bar, which determined the speed of movement of the main character, as well as random encounters. Enemies are now visible on the map all the time, allowing the player to plan their movements and develop a variety of tactics. During her adventure Aya gains experience and develops her skills. The sequel also features, although in a slightly limited form, the possibility of modifying one's equipment. Special skills using Parasite Energy have this time been divided into four elements: fire and wind-related offensive spells and defensive abilities derived from water and earth.
The creators have prepared several additional modes, which are unlocked after the completion of the basic mode. They offer a greater challenge, increase the level of difficulty or enable us to complete the whole thing again with the equipment and experience we have already gathered.
Technical aspects
Parasite Eve II is designed for older players, due to the brutality and elements of horror, among other things. The title stands out in terms of visuals among PS1 games. One of the many advantages of Squaresoft's work are the FMV cut-scenes, which present important story events.
