Paper Sorcerer, the debut project of the independent studio Ultra Runaway Games, is a representative of the dungeon crawlers genre. The title was developed with the PC platform in mind, and its creation was possible thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter.
Story
In Paper Sorcerer we play the role of the title magician, who thanks to a group of heroes was imprisoned in an unusual prison. After the sorcerer attempted to take control of the world, he was locked up in a magical book and deprived of his abilities. However, he does not give up and decides to get out of the trap and regain his lost power.
Mechanics
In Paper Sorcerer we observe the action from FPP. In the course of the game we travel in real time through a complex system of dungeons, solve environmental puzzles, progress our character and face the dangers that await them. Although the protagonist is initially weakened, he gains experience points over time, which allows him to improve his stats and acquire new skills. In addition, the magician not only gains more and more powerful equipment (both weapons and armor), but also encounters allies who accompany him in his quest; among them the healing Witch, the cunning Imp, the murderous Troll or finally the Minotaur who can go berserk.
Their company is useful because the dungeons are full of enemies. The battles take place in turn-based mode, during which it is important to skillfully use the abilities of individual party members and their objects, as well as to develop specific tactics; the latter is especially useful in boss fights. The title offers several difficulty levels, the highest of which, '1980', provides a challenge at the level of iconic representatives of the genre from the 1980s, with the Wizardry series at the forefront.
Technical aspects
Paper Sorcerer features an interesting audiovisual setting; while the graphics are cel-shaded and sport almost monochromatic colors, the catchy soundtrack consists of calm tracks accompanying the exploration and dynamic, electronic sounds playing during the battles.
