Out There: Oceans of Time is an unusual mix of strategy game with adventure and RPG. The title is a continuation of Out There, which in 2014 was a great success on mobile platforms, and in the following years went to consoles and personal computers. The independent French team of Mi-Clos Studios is responsible for both productions.

Plot

Out There: Oceans of Time takes place in the universe known from the previous installment of the cycle, but the plot does not have much connection with the story told there. In the game we control a man living on the outskirts of space, who is ordered to escort a mysterious creature known as Archon. The Beast enjoys a reputation as the most dangerous being in the universe, which it quickly proves when it escapes on its way to prison. Willing not to want to, the hero has to go in pursuit of the horror threatening the whole life in the universe. However, we cannot count on the willing support of local aliens - humanity is treated as an untrustworthy minority. So bounty hunters, criminals and unruly explorers will help him in his mission.

Mechanics

Out There: Oceans of Time is all about getting to know the vast universe and its inhabitants. The game universe is randomly generated at the start of the game, so each approach is slightly different from the previous ones. During the game we meet numerous characters and factions with whom we can establish contacts and try to convince them to support our cause. Not everyone, however, is friendly towards the hero and sometimes there is a fight.

An important part of the game is ship management. In order to meet the challenges ahead of us, we must improve it with the modules we gain, but also ensure that we have the necessary raw materials such as fuel and oxygen. These can be found on the surface of visited planets or gained through trading with allies. However, if we find that the default means of transport does not suit us, we will find many other units in the game, which we can send on expeditions to ancient cities and to abandoned planets.

Technical aspects

Unlike the previous game, Out There: Oceans of Time uses both static two-dimensional backgrounds and 3D visuals. The atmosphere is complemented by the soundtrack composed by Siddhartha Barnhoorn, who has made music not only to the original Out There, but also to Stanley Parable.
