Old School Musical is a unique rhythmic game whose characters travel through the worlds inspired by 8-bit hits from consoles and vending machines. The title is produced by La Moutarde, an independent studio in France. Old School Musical is the debut of developers and their first big project.

Plot

At Old School Musical we follow the story of Tiba and Rob, two professional heroes of video games, who were trained for this role by their missing mother. During the game we take them on a journey through the worlds inspired by classic 8-bit productions from consoles and arcade machines, and also take part in a strange rebellion of chickens, opposing their mistreatment in games. The creators of the title directly refer to electronic entertainment and pop culture from the 1980s and early 1990s.

Mechanics

As in many other rhythmic games, the game boils down to pressing one or more buttons to the rhythm of the music played in the background. Icons representing the corresponding buttons move from the four edges of the screen to the center. While playing, various animations are displayed in the background, reacting to our mistakes. The main characters have a health bar that shrinks every time they make a mistake. Once the health indicator reaches zero, we need to replay the whole level. The devs prepared more than 20 levels, to which various musical pieces are assigned.

Game modes

Old School Musical offers three variants of the game. The feature mode allows you to explore the entire history of the game and go through most of the boards prepared by the developers one by one. Challenge mode allows us to set additional obstacles during the game, thus increasing the level of difficulty. High scores unlock additional songs here. Local multiplayer mode was created for up to four players.

Technical aspects

Old School Musical has a colorful and diverse two-dimensional visual setting, juggling with different graphic styles, inspired by classic games. For the purpose of the title, a total of more than 50 songs were composed, almost all of them representing an electronic genre of chips. The composers of the music are producers known among fans of 8-bit sounds, such as Dubmood, Zabutom, Hello World, Yponeko and Le Plancton.
