The game mechanics of Obliteracers are inspired by such classic series as Micro Machines or Mario Kart. Available for PS4, PC and XONE, Obliteracers is a party action racing game kept in a cartoon film style. The game is developed by an independent Australian Space Dust Studios, also known under the trade name Varkian Empire. The studio is composed of people who have worked on such series as Battlefield, Need for Speed, Tomb Raider, Dead Space, Burnout, and Silent Hill. The title is recognised in the game industry and have won many awards, e.g. the best indie game, the best technology, or the best use of Unreal Engine – an award received during GDC 2015.

Mechanics

Mechanics of Obliteracers are inspired by such classic series as Micro Machines or Mario Kart. During the game you take part in small, intergalactic racing competitions organised on exotic planets. The game offers a broad array of strange opponents such as a humanoid elephant, or bird, and different kinds of robots. Apart from winning the race, you need to eliminate the competitors by using numerous weapons and collecting power-ups while driving. As the game offers different configurations of game modes and rules, it will cater for the tastes of both the amateurs and the veterans.

Game modes

Obliteracers introduces a single player mode in which you race exclusively with competitors controlled by AI. However, the main treat of the game is the frantic gameplay designed for up to 16 users playing at the same time. Interestingly, such number of players can compete not only via Internet, but also locally, as the innovative technology applied at Obliteracers can transform notebooks, tablets, and smartphones into controllers.

Technical aspects

Obliteracers released on PS4, PC and XONE is powered by Unreal Engine technology and offers extraordinary, colourful graphics in a cartoon movie style. There are original characters that could easily star in a science fiction cartoon film. However, it is the authors’ technology allowing 16 players to compete simultaneously in front of the same screen that deserves special attention.
