Nobunaga’s Ambition: Taishi is a 15th of the strategy games series Nobunaga’s Ambition straight from Japanese company of Koei Tecmo. The franchise was born in 1983, and the game has been released in Japan for stationary platforms and later for mobile devices. Western players had to wait until 2018 to play the title, as it has been published as part of 35th anniversary of the series.

Plot

As is the tradition of the franchise, Nobunaga’s Ambition: Taishi takes us to feudal Japan, to the Sengoku Era (15th-16th century) known for internal fights between local lords (daimyo) which torn apart the entire country. We play as one of those nobles and try to unite the nation under our rule. The game lets us create our own character or act as one of the historical heroes who gained fame during those turbulent times.

Game mechanics

Nobunaga’s Ambition: Taishi doesn’t introduce any revolutionary changes to the series’ formula, although it slightly simplifies a gameplay compared to older entries. Military development – building fortifications, training recruits and officers – is necessary during anxious times of Sengoku Era. But there are also other necessities to take care of, like trading routes and production, as we will not expand our influence on other lands without them. There is also an art of diplomacy and civil management, both of which have been reworked to add more depth to the game.

There is one huge change to a generally unchanged scheme of the franchise called Resolve System. Each officer has his own aspirations and beliefs which determine his actions in every situation. Being wary of those when selecting commanders for assignments is crucial, as entrusting someone with a task that conflicts with their mindset might end terribly.
