Nightbreed: The Action Game is an arcade game based on the plot of the film under the same title, which was directed by Clive Barker, an outstanding creator of horror movies. It tells the story of Aaron Boone, suspected of a series of murders of a young man who, tormented by nightmares, ends up in a gloomy and devastated cemetery. It turns out that just below it lies the fantastic land of Midian, inhabited by monstrous-looking people halfway between heaven and hell. Wanting unwillingly, Boone becomes their ally and soon afterwards, as a mystical warrior, he becomes a true serial killer and his fanatical band of oppressors.
In the game, Boone's first task is to get three keys to open the transition to Midian. It is there that the transformation into Cabal, a much stronger and more powerful being than Boone, which the player will be able to activate from time to time. From that moment on, a proper skirmish begins with people who want to destroy Midian and a murderer hiding his face under a grotesque mask. Of course, our hero is not defenceless when confronted with opponents. From the beginning, he can hit enemies with short circuit kicks, and in the later phase of the game - after finding a weapon - also at a distance. Physical contact with monsters always results in the loss of valuable energy. If the amount of it drops to a minimum (this symbolizes the transformation of Boone's face into a skull), the player loses one "life". Admittedly, he has been given two more, but he still has to be careful - the game is relatively difficult.
Nightbreed is an interesting proposition for fans of classic platformers, especially if they have a positive attitude towards Clive Barker's work. The audiovisual setting is very decent and makes a pleasant impression. Slightly worse is with the control, which is unnecessarily complicated, but you can get used to it after some time.
