Nex Machina: Death Machine published on PC and PS4 is a science-fiction shooter. The title has been developed by Housemarque, the studio behind e.g. Outland, Alienation, Dead Nation, and Resogun. Eugene Jarvis, the designer of such classic titles as Robotron 2048 and Smash TV, supported the development process.
Plot
The action is set in an unspecified future where society got completely addicted to modern technology. The ongoing process of technological development of the robots made them aware and sentient. The machines quickly realised their superiority over humans and decided to no longer serve an inferior species. Unfortunately, most of the society was too busy with the social media and simply enjoying themselves to notice the looming threat. You are one of the people who did see the danger and decided to act. It is up to you to thwart the plans of the aggressive robots.
Mechanics
Nex Machina: Death Machine for PC and PS4 tries to recreate the charm of old-school arcade shooters and mix it with the modern technology. The action is observed from the top-down perspective and comes down to defeating hordes of robots. As this is a twin-stick shooter, the player has much freedom when it comes to shooting. Moreover, the environment features destructible elements.
Recreating the atmosphere of old-school arcade machine shooters in a modern way was the creators’ main objective. The title introduces an online ranking with a few stages, enabling you to fight for the highest positions in a given country or city. There are regular events and tournaments, and the players have access to a constantly updated challenge list.
Technical aspects
The title features impressive visuals filled with bright colours and amazing light effects. The engine uses not only classic polygons, but also the technology of voxels, which generates some environment elements, so destroying the world is dynamic.
