Neon Beasts is a dynamic FPS inspired by, among others, TimeSplitters and Hotline Miami series, as well as the They Live movie. The project created by Blackstar Interactive Arts studio has come a long and bumpy way. The company's founder Sean Ryan, who previously co-created the fan project TimeSplitters: Rewind, started working on it back in 2013. After six years, the development of this game took off from scratch, and in 2021 a crowdfunding campaign to finish it failed. Undeterred by the failure, however, the developer decided to continue working.
Plot
Neon Beasts takes us on a journey to an alternative version of Miami. The main hero of the game is Beast - famous for his speed and brutality, an assassin codenamed "The Wolf". His task is to eliminate a dangerous terrorist - Vincent - who is waiting for him at the top of his skyscraper - Onyx Tower. To get to him, Beast must face hundreds of gangsters who have united under a common banner, taking control of the entire metropolis.
Mechanics
In Neon Beasts we observe the action from the first person perspective (FPP). Moving through Miami, we are mainly eliminating enemies. Clashes are extremely fast, and during them we use mostly firearms. In addition to accuracy and dexterity, in many places it's worth to show also perceptiveness, because a timely spotted barrel kicked in the direction of a group of enemies and hit with an accurate shot is able to do much more damage in the enemy ranks than a series from a machine gun. In addition, the protagonist has a variety of combat abilities (one of which is slowing down time). By drinking so-called Neon Cola, whose machines are located throughout the metropolis, we unlock new skills and improve the ones we already have. The game doesn't lack various notes and sound recordings, which deepen our knowledge of the presented world.
Technical aspects
The graphic design of Neon Beasts is kept in a pleasant to the eye, somewhat cartoonish style. The city glows with colours, the characters move naturally and the shots have the right momentum.
