Nekopara Extra is a classic two-dimensional visual novel adventure game. It tells the story of the Minaduki family and their six adopted kittens. It was developed by the independent Japanese studio NEKO WORKs. It is the second prequel to the Nekopara series. The first prequel was Nekopara Vol. 0, released in 2015. Since the debut of the first entry in the series, the Nekopara franchise was becoming more popular and it finally became quite a success for the small developer. In 2017, an animated adaptation of the game debuted – it was financed by the Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign.

Plot

Nekopara Extra takes place in modern Japan. The country is inhabited both by humans and by human-like cats. The cats are intelligent and can speak. The game is a prequel to other Nekopara games and it takes place one and a half year before the events depicted in other games. Kashou Minaduki is still living in his family house with his younger sister Shigure and with six adopted kittens (Maple, Vanilla, Chocola, Cinnamon, Coconut, and Azuki). The players are able to spend with them their first Christmas and learn more about the reasons why they became so bonded with Kashou.

Mechanics

Nekopara Extra is a visual novel adventure game. The gameplay focuses on players reading lines of texts enriched with illustrations and animated character portraits. The players can’t make any decisions that would impact the story. The game is very short and can be completed in a few hours.

Technical aspects

Nekopara Extra features high-quality graphics. The E-mote system is worth attention – it is responsible for the animation of characters. Thanks to a few technical tricks, the two-dimensional portraits of characters can move fluently or express emotions. In addition to that, all character dialogues were dubbed by professional Japanese actors.
