Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord - War Sails is the first expansion to the 2022 sandbox game, combining strategy and RPG elements. The expansion was created by the developers of the base game - the Turkish studio TaleWorlds. It brings a new faction and new mechanics.
Naval battles
The biggest novelty introduced in Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord - War Sails is the ability to sail and engage in naval battles. The developers allow us not only to command the crew of one of the various ships, but also to take control of the entire fleet. It can organize blockades, and also penetrate deep into the lands, using rivers. Relying on the river systems can serve us both for attacking areas located far from the coasts, and for supplying the army.
During skirmishes, we must pay attention to the positioning of our ships, the strength and direction of the wind, and the behavior of the water. By ramming enemy units or destroying their oars, sails, and hulls, we can immobilize them, which allows us to board them. Additional threats are posed by violent storms, which we have to face.
As we progress, we expand our fleet and upgrade our existing ships using various sails, rams, and siege machines. We can also develop the ports that belong to us.
Northern Kingdom and Nords
The key mechanics of this expansion are also linked to a new faction - they are the Nords inspired by the Vikings, who are specialists in trade and warfare. They inhabit the Northern Kingdom full of jagged peaks and ice-bound fjords, which we can freely explore. The add-on allows us to both take control over the Nords and function alongside them, establishing diplomatic and trade relations with them or waging wars.
Remaining features
The introduction of ships, naval battles, and a new faction affects the political situation, trade, diplomacy, and the way wars are conducted throughout the game world (not only in the Northern Kingdom). Additionally, Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord - War Sails brings previously unavailable companions, as well as banners, hairstyles, tattoos, and armors associated with the Nords. The list of novelties is topped by maritime skills that we can develop, and unique weapons waiting to be created (led by spears, swords, and axes).
Technical aspects
Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord - War Sails is a non-standalone expansion, so it requires the base version of the game Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord.
