Would-be Reboot Brings Little Novelty. We Played Mortal Kombat 1
Is NetherRealm resetting its flagship series with Mortal Kombat 1? Only in terms of marketing and, somewhat, narratively. The fighting game does not dramatically change its face and in terms of gameplay, it rather sticks to the guns.

Destructoid: 8 / 10 by Steven Mills
Even though Mortal Kombat 1 is no Flawless Victory, it still feels like a step forward for the franchise. The core gameplay is the best it’s ever been, which I think is the most important thing for the genre.
TheGamer: 4 / 5 by George Foster
It’s a shame that Invasions and the snail’s pace progression drag Mortal Kombat 1 down a little because, if it wasn’t for them, this would easily be the best Mortal Kombat to date. Even with those problems, MK1’s excellent gameplay and story mode make it a much-needed breath of fresh air for the series and a great first step into an exciting new timeline.
GameSpot: 8 / 10 by Jason Fanelli
Great mechanics and a wild story make a solid first impression, but a shallow selection of modes keeps MK1 from a flawless victory.
The main pros of the game
- Graphics and Visuals: Many users praised the stunning graphics, detailed character models, and impressive environments, noting that the game looks beautiful.
- Gameplay Mechanics: The combat system is generally well-received, with some players appreciating the new Kameo system and the balance between accessibility for newcomers and depth for experienced players.
- Story Mode: The story is highlighted as a standout feature, with engaging narratives and cinematic quality that reimagines the Mortal Kombat universe.
- Character Variety: Players enjoy the diverse cast of characters, including returning favorites and new additions, contributing to the overall appeal of the game.
- Single Player Modes: Modes like Invasions and Towers provide additional gameplay options that some players found enjoyable, although opinions on Invasions vary.
The main cons of the game
- Optimization Issues: A significant number of reviews pointed out poor optimization, particularly on PC, leading to frame drops, stuttering, and crashes even on high-end systems.
- Lack of Content: Many users expressed disappointment regarding the perceived lack of content, especially in offline modes, and felt that the game feels incomplete.
- Microtransactions: The monetization model, including expensive DLCs and character unlocks, received criticism for being excessive and frustrating, leading to a feeling of being nickel-and-dimed.
- Kameo System: While some players enjoyed the Kameo system, others felt it detracted from traditional gameplay, with many cameo characters being viewed as wasted potential.
- Limited Customization: Users noted a lack of character customization options compared to previous titles, which diminished the overall experience.
The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users
- More Content: Users expressed a desire for more single-player content, including additional story chapters and offline modes.
- Character Customization: Players missed the extensive customization options present in previous Mortal Kombat games, such as gear and special attacks.
- More Fatalities: Some users wanted more than one fatality per character, feeling that the game lacked variety in this aspect.
- Better Tutorials: Several reviews mentioned that the in-game tutorials were confusing and not helpful for new players trying to learn the game.
- Improved Game Modes: Suggestions for improving or replacing Invasions mode were common, with many players preferring a system similar to the Krypt from MK11.
Summary
- Overall, while Mortal Kombat 1 has its strengths, particularly in graphics and story, significant concerns about optimization, content, and monetization practices have left many players feeling dissatisfied.

Mortal Kombat 1 Description
Mortal Kombat 1 is a new installment in the bestselling series of violent fighting games originating from 1992. It was first created by American studio Midway Games (and since 2009 was taken over by NetherRealm), also responsible for other games such as Injustice. To this day, the company oversees the Mortal Kombat franchise, this game being its twelfth main installment. The game was announced for PC, PS5, Xbox S/X and Nintendo Switch, once again being published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.
Plot
Mortal Kombat 1 is set in its reborn universe created by Fire God Liu Kang. The well-known kombatants enter a new era, free to decide whether to join forces or oppose each other once again. Even in this new reality, however, one thing stays certain: there's always something worth fighting for.
Mechanics
Mortal Kombat revolves around 1-on-1 battles on diverse arenas. Each character has a unique fighting style, moveset and combos. The twelfth installment introduces a new combat system and new fatalities.
The roster is composed of returning characters, although their designs have been changed to differentiate the game from previous installments. Though Liu Kang, Sub-Zero, Mileena, Scorpion and others are all playable, they've been rebuilt from the ground up and differ from how they were in previous games. There's also a unique character, Shang Tsung, available for purchase when pre-ordering.
Another new feature are the Kameo Fighters, that is, assist characters who help us in combat, expanding our possibilities. These are selected separately from their own roster.
Game modes
The game features multiplayer and a singleplayer story campaign.
Technical aspects
The game's 3D visuals run on NetherRealm Studios' proprietary engine.
Other information
Mortal Kombat 1 has been released in several versions: Standard, as well as Premium and Kollector, which guarantee early access to the game. The Premium Edition includes rewards such as the Kombat Pack, which contains an exclusive skin for Johnny Cage based off the Belgian actor Jean-Claude Van Damme (known from action movies such as Bloodsport and Hard Target). The more expensive Kollector's Edition, in addition to content from the Premium Edition, also includes a Liu Kang sculpture, exclusive art prints and more Dragon Krystals.
