Minions of Mirth is an original program designed for MS Windows and Mac OS X platforms, combining extremely complex MMORPG items with classic, singled cRPG games. It is available in two versions - free and premium, with the first one offering a much poorer range of possibilities and providing only online mode (without the need to pay a monthly subscription), while the full, commercial version allows you to fight epic online battles with players from all over the world, as well as to have a quiet, subtle fun at home (single player variant). The ideally discussed position closest to the famous Neverwinter Nights, which also included a refined single mode and "Persistent Worlds".
The title is maintained in the standard, not very innovative fantasy convention, drawing on the achievements of Tolkien, D&D or Warhammer. So we have here initially twelve different races, divided into the light (Fellowship of Light) and dark (Minions of Darkness) side of power. There is no revolution in this respect, either good breeds (people, elves, dwarves, titans, etc.) or bad breeds (dark elves, goblins, ploughs, stallions - available only in a premium version) or neutral breeds (whose representatives appear on both sides of the conflict, e.g. drakens or gnomes) are based on old, proven ideas and there is little freshness here. Very interestingly, however, is the third strength - after completing specific orders, the option of playing monsters is unlocked. This, of course, increases the motivation of players to perform subsequent tasks and gives the gameplay a little colour. Each nation modifies the set of parameters accordingly, which predestines the selection of the appropriate character class in advance. There are sixteen of them in total, a part available to everyone (warrior, magician, priest, druid, etc.), and a part only for law-abiding individuals (paladin, bards, monks, hunters) or chaotic individuals (knight of annihilation, killer, necromancer). All in all, the choice is very wide, and when we mention that the player has the ability to create and lead the whole team (up to three heros for the freeware version, up to six for the premium version) and join in alliances with other players (up to 36 heroes in the party), we quickly notice the wealth of content of Minions of Mirth. The more so as the game world is very extensive, it consists of a total of 14 areas of considerable size, filled to the brim with cities, NPCs offering quests and monsters.
The commercial version also offers a number of interesting add-ons. Our characters can take advantage of the multi-grade, which consists in gaining experience levels in a different class than the one originally selected, which of course results in completely new skills and possibilities (we combine up to 3 classes, reaching up to 100 levels in each class). The database of items, skills and spells is also significantly expanded. It is possible to have a pet, which is a popular pet. We can freely arm and train it at our discretion. Full version owners can also set up their own private worlds and use dedicated PvP and Premium servers, all without paying any subscription fee. Interestingly, if you are currently playing in single mode, you can easily use the option of conducting online conversations with players who are currently on a multi-server. The whole is illustrated by a graphic design based on the Torque Game Engine (based on engine Tribes 2) - it is characterized by, among other things, a refined system of weather conditions mapping. Finally, the program makes extensive use of Python programming language and is very susceptible to all kinds of modifications, add-ons and extensions, which again brings to mind the famous Neverwinter Nights.
