Microsoft Flight Simulator X Description
Microsoft Flight Simulator X is a new edition of the most popular flying simulators developed for PC. The fans of the series had to wait over two years, as Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004: A Century of Flight was released in 2003. The developers optimized the program to work best under a computer with Windows XP operating system, however those owning a 64 bit version of Windows Vista had access to new effects and visual options.
Mechanics
The new edition is mainly characteristic for its improved visuals and audio effects. The graphics are integrated with DirectX 10, showcasing new features such as spectacular weather effects and more detailed models. When it comes to sound effects, the game supports 5.1 channel surround sound, a feature which should be appreciated by every enthusiast of aviation.
We are free to travel around the virtual version of Earth, with 28 detailed cities and over 24 thousand recreated airfields from all around the world. It should be mentioned that the popular World Aeronautical Database (www.worldaerodata.com) contains two times less entries. The players can assume control of numerous air machines, from airliners (including Boeing 787 or Airbus A321), through stunt planes and helicopters, up to hydroplanes (e.g. Grumman G-21 Goose).
The game contains a mission system that gradually exposes us to the art of piloting, offering various rewards such as hidden features or new airplanes. The system is somewhat similar to the one found in Gran Turismo, in which we need to pass the tests for different types of licenses. Moreover, the team responsible for the game also introduced an extensive multiplayer mode (either online or through local area networks), as well as backwards compatibility for add-ons (e.g. containing new airplanes) that were developed for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004: A Century of Flight.
