A spin-off of the popular Micro Machines series prepared by Codemasters. Instead of tiny vehicles, we race as shrunk down characters who race on tracks full of traps. Each of the heroes has unique abilities and qualities, thanks to which they can gain advantage over their competitors.
Story
The world of the future. Earth's resources are shrinking at a rapid pace and the mankind is threatened with extinction. Dr. Minimizer is developing a plan to reduce the planet's population to a small size so that it can get by with a small amount of food and fuel. He starts looking for a super soldier who will prepare the world for small people. He organizes a competition with twelve volunteers to see which one is best suited to this role. The unusual struggles include a man with a motorcycle engine mounted in his body, a student passionate about astrophysics, a boy-insect or an unusual creature that is a combination of different animals.
Mechanics
Micro Maniacs is an arcade game in which twisted characters compete on bizarre tracks filled with traps. The camera shows their struggle from an isometric perspective. Eleven characters with different skills are available to the players. Each hero can use his or her ability to eliminate competitors or make their lives more difficult. Individual special attacks have several power levels. In order to execute their strongest version, it is necessary to collect the appropriate number of power-ups, which are located on the track.
Game modes
The devs have prepared several standard gameplay modes. In the challenge-based story mode, the players can develop the available characters by unlocking stronger versions of their special attacks, as well as discovering new heroes and hidden maps. For fans of multiplayer, there is a traditional time trial, as well as well-known the Micro Machines versus, where the aim is to throw the remaining players out of the screen.
Technical aspects
Micro Maniacs employes the dedicated PS1 multitap and enables up to eight people to compete at once. The game is characterized by a unique, slightly cartoonosh style and twisted, far from realism, design of characters and levels.
