Push Square: 6 / 10 by John Cal McCormick
There's a kernel of a fantastic tactical role playing game in Miasma Chronicles, but it lacks polish in a few key areas, and while the lore and the characters are endearing in their own right the overarching fiction that binds it all together disappoints.
ZTGD: 8 / 10 by Terrence Johnson
Miasma Chronicles isn’t far removed from the studios previous outing with Mutant Year Zero in neither setting or gameplay. That doesn’t mean however that it’s a bad game at all, Miasma feels more polished and nuanced than its predecessor which speaks volumes of the talent at the studio. However, for me the narrative wasn’t as strong as the world itself which wasn’t helped by the feeling of an abrupt ending to the whole affair. But Miasma Chronicles remains a good time due to the mix of tactical strategy and stealth gameplay.
Checkpoint Gaming: 7.5 / 10 by Victor Tan
Miasma Chronicles takes the turn-based strategy formula and throws on additional layers of stealth to enforce guerilla-warfare strategies. It largely succeeds in this goal, ensuring players take in their surroundings while taking out as many enemies as they can. When combat starts, you use various abilities and character strengths to survive. This gameplay immerses you well, making you want to plan out your next strategy as soon as possible. There are some flaws in the gameplay, such as abilities and environmental objects not working as intended. It's also too easy to accidentally commit to a mistake while looking over the battlefield. But there are more strengths than weaknesses that allow Miasma Chronicles to deliver a fun strategic experience.
The main pros of the game
- Tactical Combat: The combat system, which combines turn-based mechanics with stealth assassination elements, is well-received. Players appreciate the unique approach to thinning out enemies before engaging in direct combat.
- Worldbuilding and Atmosphere: The game creates a believable and immersive post-apocalyptic world, with good graphics and atmosphere. Many players enjoyed the visual design and the overall setting.
- Character Dynamics: The relationships between characters, particularly the protagonist and his robot brother, are highlighted as a strong point. Players found the interactions engaging.
- Gameplay Mechanics: The game offers a sandbox feel with various combat arenas and a unique leveling system where skills and HP increase gradually, preventing players from becoming overpowered too quickly.
- Overall Enjoyment: Many players found the game enjoyable despite its flaws, with some recommending it as a worthwhile experience, especially for fans of the developers' previous work.
The main cons of the game
- Story and Dialogue: The narrative and dialogue received significant criticism, with many players describing them as weak, silly, or poorly written. Some felt the plot was disjointed or lacked depth.
- Bugs and Technical Issues: Several users reported encountering major bugs that affected gameplay, including losing weapons and experiencing unintended XP gains.
- Underwhelming Powers: The protagonist's Miasma powers were seen as disappointing, especially considering their limited effectiveness compared to standard weapons.
- Cover System Issues: The cover mechanics were criticized for being ineffective, with players noting that enemies often missed shots and that the cover did not provide adequate damage reduction.
The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users
- Character Choices: Players noted the lack of meaningful choices and branching dialogues, as the story is linear with predetermined outcomes.
- Dynamic Environments: Some players compared the game unfavorably to *Mutant Year Zero*, citing the absence of destructible environments and dynamic combat scenarios.
- Diverse Weaponry: There were mentions of a limited selection of weapons, which some players felt detracted from the overall experience.
- Satisfying Endgame: The conclusion of the game felt rushed to some, lacking a satisfying resolution to the story and character arcs.
Summary
- Overall, while Miasma Chronicles has its strengths, particularly in gameplay mechanics and atmosphere, it also faces notable criticism regarding its story, technical execution, and character development.

Plot
Miasma Chronicles is set in a grim near future, America turned into a post-apocalyptic wasteland due to a mysterious force known as Miasma. The main protagonist of the game is a young man named Elvis, living in the mining town of Sedentary alongside his guardian robot, Diggs. Having received a Miasma-controlling gauntlet from his mother to keep him safe, Elvis and his friends set out on a journey to find answers. They do not know their actions will affect the fate of all mankind.
Mechanics
Miasma Chronicles makes use of the top-down perspective. The player traverses grim wastelands and ruined cities, completing quests. There are plenty of enemies to encounter on the way; though exploration takes place in real time, battles are turn-based. Combat requires tactical sense and thoughtful use of our characters' abilities.
As we progress through the game we acquire more powerful weapons and upgrade already owned ones. Over time we also develop our characters and teach them new skills.
Technical aspects
Miasma Chronicles features high-quality visuals. The locations and enemies are all diverse and very detailed.
