IGN: 6.5 / 10 by Chloi Rad
So much of Metal Gear Survive is repeating the same thing over and over again in single- and multiplayer. Defending the same points from the same zombies. Exploring the same zones for the same materials. Mining the same resources for the same small amounts of gear. But after learning the ropes and learning to set your own personal goals within that loop, there's an odd comfort in the formula, and I can see myself returning to expand my end-game base out of my own completionist urges. Survive might not compare well to the tactical espionage action that's defined the Metal Gear series we know and love, but its oddly hit-or-miss combo of some solid old ideas and some clumsy new ones has at least some appeal.
Giant Bomb: 2 / 5 by Jeff Gerstmann
Metal Gear Survive is both a bad survival game and a bad Metal Gear game.
Game Informer: 6 / 10 by Suriel Vazquez
Metal Gear Survive has plenty to do, but the story mode is a dud and the endgame loops don't hold up

Metal Gear Survive Description
Metal Gear Survive is a cooperative action game with survival and stealth elements, taking place in cult-classic Metal Gear universe. Survive is the first game of the series developed without the supervision of Hideo Kojima, the legendary creator of the series. However, the game is not a fully-fledged continuation of the series, but a spin-off that attempts to use tried mechanics from MGS V: The Phantom Pain in a multiplayer-oriented title. The game was developed for PC, PS4 and XONE by the internal studio of Konami, which was responsible for the series, and managed to keep the trademark.
Plot
Survive creates an alternative aftermath of the events seen in MGS V: Ground Zeroes. The marine base which we’ve build in Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker had been destroyed by XOF, a radical wing of CIA. All of the sudden, a wormhole ruptures the sky, teleporting the remnants of oil rigs, along with soldiers still manning them to another dimension. There, the soldiers of Militaries Sans Frontieres have to fight for survival in an unwelcoming world infested with zombie-like monsters and numerous dangers.
Mechanics
Metal Gear Survive is an attempt to employ The Phantom Pain mechanics in a cooperation-oriented multiplayer game, mixing its trademark stealth gameplay with survival elements popular in present-day games, and a cooperation-oriented playstyle. The action takes place in an alternative reality with a post-apocalyptic flavor, full of desolate areas, ruined bases and other mysterious compounds, inhabited by terrifying monsters that are a result of unknown scientific experiments. Interestingly enough, even if firearms are a large part of the game’s inventory, the players have to rely on melee weapons and bows, which often are more useful than their modern counterparts. Survival elements are an integral part of the game – our main objective is to survive in a hostile environment, while the scarce resources found around the area can be used to craft new weapons and equipment.
Game Modes
Metal Gear Survive is a cooperation-oriented game for up to four players. However, the authors introduced a single player mode, in which the remaining players are controlled by the AI.
Technical Aspects
The game makes use of the FOX Engine, already field-tested and praised as one of the highlights of the fifth installment of the series. As a result, the game is characterized by detailed graphics, which design and style were influenced by previous entries in Metal Gear series.
