Mercyful Flames is an RPG in which we play the role of an inquisitor tracking down the minions of dark forces in an alternative version of the Middle Ages. The game features an uncompromising, dark atmosphere. It was developed by the Polish independent studio Asmodev (creators of Priest Simulator). The publisher is the Gaming Factory.
Plot
In Mercyful Flames, the player takes on the role of an occultist, who becomes an inquisitor. The protagonist is trying to save a loved one, going as far as exceptional cruelty.
Mechanics
Mercyful Flames is a detective RPG. The gameplay is mainly about investigating, which requires exploring locations, searching for various evidence and clues, as well as conversations with NPCs. During conversations we use the protagonist's intelligence - we can influence others through persuasion or fear.
We interrogate those suspected of pacting with the devil using a variety of torture tools - including machines developed by ourselves. We burn guilty people on stakes.
It is worth noting that as we progress through the game, our character's abilities grow (we receive various powers resulting from the divine grace), as does his reputation.
Game modes
In Mercyful Flames we can only play alone. The core of the game is the story campaign.
Technical aspects
Mercyful Flames features a simple, 3D graphic design. Both character models and the game environment are characterised by a rather low level of detail, but the artistic style used by the developers helps to hide some of the deficiencies. As a result, the game has an undeniable atmosphere.
Other information
Due to the extremely brutal theme of Mercyful Flames - including torture and burning people alive - the game is for adult players only.
